Chapter 10

At fifteen minutes past twelve, we were all beginning to think that this mystery movie star was not going to turn up since there was no sign of her or no messages from her people to explain why she might be running late. There were no orders from above to tell us what was happening so we could do nothing but wait it out. Since she is bound to come through those doors any second now so we stand around like a bunch of mannequins daring not to move (or breathe if we’re talking about Horace) in case we missed her big entrance. Hell, it might have been a total waste of time opening the store just for her to do some Christmas shopping for all we know at this stage since she may well have changed her mind or got a better offer to do something else. Either way, just being here sees me still getting the triple overtime whether I work for it or not. It is a ‘win-win’ situation for me if you look at it like that. So why do I often feel so guilty when I am trying to provide for my child if I am not the one looking after my baby 24/7 and missing out on any precious moments. In fact I would call that a ‘lose-lose’ situation for any mother to find herself in as it can sometimes hurt more than your pocket to the point that you are damned if you do and damned if you do not, in a way.

This place being the flagship store in the HOBBITS chain alongside smaller outlets dotted around the country makes it the obvious one that the movie star would visit for a spot of Christmas shopping. So there was no avoiding a face-to-face with the ex of Nelson Hobbit as most of the staff members find it thrilling to serve such a person, not me, I find it to be a challenge already and they have not even turned up yet so God help me when they do. Mind you, it was probably also a waste of effort on my part to try to look my best. Having put my hair up in rollers as soon as I got home and redone my makeup on the way back here in the car, when Karl kindly dropped me off. Only to have to wear the same old stupid store uniform of brightly coloured dotty shirt and dungarees. I could not even get away with wearing the sexy heels that I smuggled in with me for Mr Tremble spied them and made me change into my flat boots, so seriously I do not know why I bother sometimes. Why am I bothered?

‘OK everyone . . . I can confirm that our celebrity customer is on her way but it will be another 10 minutes I’m afraid before she arrives,’ said Mr Tremble as he parades up and down the greeting line to let us know when to expect her arrival.
